The Polar Express

Back in September someone at book club mentioned Santa and Polar Express train rides in the area.  A few web searches and phone calls later had me realizing that if we wanted to participate in such a program we had to sign up immediately because they are all run through area park districts and fill up at the fall program registration.  Our village doesn't sponsor one of these events so we picked the one in Burr Ridge.  I sent out an email to a bunch of friends and got a group of nine families to sign up together.  After three long months of waiting, the big day finally arrived on December 16th.  We boarded a Metra train in Hinsdale which took us to the Walter Payton Roundhouse in Aurora, AKA the North Pole.  Santa greeted us a directed us to "his house" where we took pictures with him, ate brunch, did a craft and enjoyed a magic show.  The kids were so excited to ride a train "like the one that daddy takes to work" (even though he only rides it when visiting clients in the city, we almost always walk or drive to pick him up).
Waiting on the train platform.

Our train was running late so we got to watch several others go by up close.

On the train on the way there.

Exploring the upper level of the train car.

They gave us packets including pictures to color, crayons and the Polar Express story to read on the way there.

Our attempt to take a family photo with Santa (as taken from the side by a friend).

James was happy to give Santa a high-five when we got off the train, but sitting close to him was another story.

Baby Desi, however, had no fear of the bearded man.

2012 Holiday Sing

It's amazing what a difference a year makes!  My shy little girl who barely mouthed words from last year was replaced by a natural performed belting out all of the words this year.  It was a great program and we were so glad that Papa Chuck and Grandma Dolly could join us.  Video to come.

With her teacher Mrs. Glatz.

Christmas cookie time

Our contribution to Masini family Christmas this year was cookies so the munchkins and I got out our cookie cutters and sprinkles and went to work.
My little sprinklers.

The only sprinkled plate.

The frosted and sprinkled plate.
Only 8 cookies were left over so I would say they were a hit!

My handyman

The kitchen (and hallways up and down) were painted at the same time as the dining room which meant taking down the pot rack.  It took us a few weeks, but my wonderful handyman husband put it back up this week.  Now just to bring all of the pans back down from the guest room:)

Wren's b-day party

James felt super special because he was invited to two birthday parties in one day!  The first was the little sister of one of Carolyn's friends and the whole family was invited to attend.  It was a hayride and hot chocolate around a campfire at the Danada Equestrien Center.  It was forecasted to be a pretty cold day and since the entire party was outside baby Desi enjoyed a few hours at home with Papa Dave.
Walking through the barns to the party.

James and his friend Peter.

Charlie and Chopper were the horses who pulled us.  James and Carolyn still talk about them.  James and Desi left early to head to James' second party while Carolyn and I enjoyed a second time on the hayride.

Papa Dave's visit

We love that work sends Papa Dave to Chicago occassionally because he is typically able to extend his trip to include a long weekend with us.  We had a jam packed weekend of fun and the kids were very sad when we had to say goodbye.

Baby Desi's first time in a restaurant high chair.

Zoo visit with Papa. (last weekend Desi went back and they moved the trees so that you can fully see the sign)!

Happy Birthday, Daddy!

Daddy turned 40 this year and we celebrated with a weekend of delicious food...Kona Grill, Uncle Julio's and finally a date night for Mommy and Daddy at Gibson's.  We love you , Daddy!

Look who's standing

He has pulled to standing on the couch and on toys before, but this was the first morning that I caught him standing in his crib.

Village Christmas Trees

The evening of Dec. 2 was unusually warm so we went for a family walk to the village green to check out the lights.

Thanksgiving continued

It was a few weeks early, but since the whole family was together Anne had a cake for and we sang to Desi.

It was a seventy degree day so James and I joined Auntie Marchia and Ryno on a walk around the neighborhood.  James loved the stop at the playground.

When we got back we stopped at Sam, Jet and Jake's candy stand.

Thankfully they accepted high fives as a form of payment for candy for James.

Happy cousins:)
